Lesson Description: Humongous Hero is a project that involves proportions and the use of scale. Students use proportions and the handprint of the Humongous Hero to determine its height and body measurements. Then they make a scale model of the superhero that can be drawn on poster board. Finally, students use proportions to determine the dimensions of various items owned by the hero.
Math Content: Writing and Solving Proportions; Using Proportional Reasoning to Create a Scale Model; Metric Measurement; Using Proportions to Solve Problems
Time Required: 3-5 Class Periods
Humongous Hero Proportion and Scale Project includes:
- 5 Humongous Hero assignment sheets
- 3 Humongous Hero Teacher Tips pages
- 1 Humongous Hero Cover Sheet
Materials Needed: Centimeter measuring tapes, poster board, butcher paper, large hand cutouts

Teacher Testimonial: Humongous Hero is a group project that the students really enjoy. They measure each other to help determine the size of the Humongous Hero and then use a scale to reduce the superhero down to a size that can be drawn on their poster board. When I have used this project before, the students really enjoyed designing the look of the person (superhero) and they relied upon their mathematics to keep him in proportion.
Teachers Are Talking About the Humongous Hero Proportion and Scale Project
Here’s what teachers are saying about the Humongous Hero Proportion and Scale Project:
“My students enjoyed working on the “Humongous Hero” Project. It provided a much-needed break from the daily math routine. After reviewing proportions and the proportion equality, the students were able to apply that knowledge to this giant “hero” and create his “scaled down” image together. It was a great cooperative learning activity. Thank you, Mark, for the detailed directions and great worksheets.”
-Donna Sherry, Serrano Intermediate School, CA
“This was the perfect activity to review proportions with my students. They loved creating their own superheroes!”
– Rebecca B., math teacher
“My kids looooooved this project!!!”
– Hannah Bohlen, math teacher
“This project involves proportions and scale by challenging students to determine the missing height and body dimensions by using handprint left by the Humongous Hero. Very engaging!”
– Judy H., math teacher
“My students loved this activity…did not have to worry about everyone participating in the group. Very useful resource!”
– Nicole King, math teacher
“This was fun for my 6th graders, and gave them plenty of opportunity to practice solving proportions!”
